My recent book, OUR NIPPER was inspired while on a coach journey. We were held up at roadworks. I looked out at a row of dilapidated Victorian houses and made out the inscription above the door: Charity Home for Displaced Women and Girls. I thought to myself, 'Mm, I wonder what went on in there?'
