For me, Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe from the Anne books written by L.M. Montgomery is my favourite fictional couple. One reason is because the character of Anne, depicted back in the early twentieth century, resisted gender stereotypes, and not only became a teacher, but earned her Bachelor Of Arts--unheard of at that time.
Many women just got teaching certificates, and that was as far as they were expected to go. Anne was always bright, earning a scholarship to Queen's University, and didn't let any barrier get in her way. She was always herself, and Gilbert liked that from the very beginning.
Even though she stopped teaching when she and Gilbert got married and started a family, Anne was always unconventional, and brought her children to believe, embrace in the power of imagination. Her character also inspired me to become a writer, as she also wrote when she was younger, and always believed in the magic of books, story, and the oral.
I remember when the author depicted Anne doing a performance of Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman. It will forever remain in my memory. Yes, and for her to find someone who would always support her gifts, and embrace her uniqueness was quite a gift. Yes, these two characters are fictional but they inspired a young girl like myself, at that age, to dream, that anything is possible.
