One way I deal with writer's block is to take my character for a walk - literally. I get away from my desk, go somewhere I haven't been before, and walk around in my character's shoes, imaging how they would perceive the setting. The idea for Mother of Pearl was sparked by a 2013 newspaper article that mentioned a ‘sharp rise’ in citizenship requests for Australian children born in Thailand, and attributing this to Australians flocking overseas ‘to find birth mothers for their children’.
