Michael K. Brantley That's tough because I read so much non-fiction and the fiction I do read is not really in fantastical places. Sometimes I think following Robert Langdon or Sherlock Holmes would be fun.
Michael K. Brantley I can do better than that and offer a two-word horror story:

Fear clowns.
Michael K. Brantley The Night Manager by LeCarre, The Trigger Town by Hugo, Above the Waterfall by Ron Rash, Chase the Lion. More to be added later, for sure.
Michael K. Brantley There are no great mysteries, but I did have some interesting stories from my newspaper days. A company tried to "sneak" in a hazardous waste project into an old factory and I found out. We ran several stories and I was called for an "interview," which turned out to be an intimidation meeting. That only increased the coverage, the plan was foiled. Another time, a corrupt sheriff threatened me right before a press conference by mentioning that he knew my address - right after we'd run some pretty damning stories about an episode where he manhandled a political opponent in front of witnesses at the courthouse.
Michael K. Brantley I don't know if this fits the pure definition of couple, but I like Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. The chemistry created on the page is there, and the humor subtle. I like the balance between an intelligent normal man and a man of amazing intellect, but perhaps not so normal.
Michael K. Brantley Thank you for reading my book, and for taking the time to leave such a nice comment.
Michael K. Brantley Don't force your way through it. It is just like sports, just keep playing your game and the shots will fall. Watch a good movie or better yet, read. Then read some more.
Michael K. Brantley I am not one of those people who thinks you have to write everyday, no matter. Sometimes, it is just not there. Those can be idea days. It is strange what gets things going - it can be music, a movie, or even a conversation or overheard comment. When I get to going, it might go on for days, and then the cycle starts again.
Michael K. Brantley I've started researching my next project. It deals with a NC character during the Civil War.
Michael K. Brantley Never give up. There will be times of discouragement, and times of elation. It only takes one "yes" from a publisher to make a book ... and it doesn't matter how many "no" answers you had before. Do the work, though, it isn't easy. Read, then write, as a professor once said, and make sure the quality is there. This means lots of revision.
Michael K. Brantley "Memory Cards" was inspired by what started as a 300-word assignment in a graduate school class. It was fun to write. I had no idea a book would come from this idea, or that my first effort would be a memoir. A lot of things didn't get in this time, so look for more.
