Add more zombies.
Seriously though, I add conflict. If I write a section that seems to be going nowhere or might be getting boring, then I throw a wrench in -- more zombies, somebody gets shot ... anything unexpected, then I just see where the story goes from there.

1. Find your voice: keep writing for any ideas you have, and try different voices, such as first person, third person, omniscient, and even second person. You'll eventually find a style that works for you.
2. Use a creative technique to discover an idea for writing: take the genre you want to write about, and add a random "thing" -- a person, a situation, a technology, and just write a paragraph on how they're connected.

I've always been a good storyteller -- mostly about the crazy things that have happened to me: seven near-death experiences at my last count. I've been writing non-fiction essays for a while, but it took a lot of short story and start/stop attempts before I was able to successfully write fiction.
