Oh, you just write through it, mostly. You write stuff and maybe it works, or maybe you come back the next day and cut it all out and try again.

Way up north of Keraine, there's these other places where the raiders come from...this culture is loosely (VERY loosely) based on Norse stuff (in the same way Casting in Stone and A Spell in the Country are based very loosely on medieval and Celtic cultures - but it's all re-imagined, I don't pretend to these being historical in any way.
So the next book seems to be about some of the people from there.

Casting in Stone is based on a couple of throwaway lines I wrote in "A Spell in the Country". They were purely for background - to give the reader a sense of the kind of family the main character came from, but then, as a writer, I started asking myself questions. "What kind of person was that? What's their story?" and it just wouldn't leave me alone.
