It was partly inspired by the drought and fire of 2002, and partly by a story someone once told me of a near-tragedy at Bright Sand Lake. The tragedy in the novel doesn't bear much resemblance to the tragedy that inspired it. It was more the idea that something tragic could happen at this lake that I knew so well.
