I got a job as a botanist working for my local public works department. On the first day of the job, I learned that using herbicide was a large component of what would supposedly make the restoration project "work." As an organic farmer by training and profession, I was amazed and appalled by the scope of this practice in the ecological restoration community, and felt that by offering a holistic perspective on the challenges of invasive species, I could help make the practice of restoration move towards one that doesn't need or use herbicide.
