Crime-Mystery-Suspense-Thrillers are my choice of leisure reading. However, only such books which are solidly written with plausible plots, in a pacy style and well researched with idiosyncratic and memorable characters. In each of my books I always attempt to write to meet these standards. In the meantime I'm reading more and more literary fiction.

The hardest and the most enjoyable part in writing a book (and for that matter any of my books) is the research necessary to bring the characters to life and to make the story plausible. I also take pains to make the portrayal of the back plot as realistic as possible so as to add depth. This is basic to creating the microworld I strive for.

I have just published the second book in the crime fiction series The Casebook of DCS Frank Kruger. He is chief of the Munich Serious Crimes division. A revival of the noir type of anti hero, a top cop with a wry sense of humour and a romantic vein for the good old days but nonetheless very much in tune with the needs of a modern police force. And he succeeds in the most subtle of ways of seeing the baddies brought to justice. The third volume involves the investigation into the mysterious murder of a prominent art dealer and auction house owner who is involved in the dark underworld but lucrative business of stolen and forged works of art. A fascinating world of of white-collar crime where the criminals are as elusive as eels in the mud of a river bed and the victims run shy of publicity and the limelight.

Being creative. You can create a microworld all of your own, people it with characters, dream up all sorts of problems they have to cope with, get them into trouble, get them out of it ... and so on - while keeping up the suspense. Each of my books takes place in such a microworld. I find this creative aspect of writing fascinating. Also, I have a logical mind and am a stickler for logic in my plots. Writing is for me an art form that offers me this freedom.

I never get writer's block. Why? Simple. I structure each book minutely from the very beginning. Starting with a synopsis, fleshing out a plot, doing lots pf research into storyline, backstory, characters, location, and finally breaking down the result into rough chapters ... Then I start writing. Instead of block, I develop more and better ideas as I go along.
