The Notorious RBG hung up her robe for the last time, and Donald Trump won a second rigged election. It was a dark and stormy night.

I just graduated law school and will be sitting for the Florida bar exam in late July. So Florida law books make up the bulk of my summer reading list. As far as literature goes, I'm reading The Underground Railroad by Colston Whitehead and Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins right now. Usually I don't plan out what I'll read ahead of time. My stack of unread books is too huge to ever hope to finish, so I just pick the book that feels right at the time I'm picking out the next book to read.

Hi, Roo! The exact release date is officially January 1, but I know that many people are already receiving in the mail the copies they ordered through Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

There's no such thing. Sit in the chair; put words on paper. They don't have to be good words. Just put words down. Then--of course--some of them will be better than others. But writer's block? That's just an excuse not to write.

Besides the opportunity to serve as master and creator of your own world and characters, I get to meet many other people who are as interested in literature as I am. Whether it be booksellers, people who come to readings, academics, or whoever else I come into contact with as a consequence of having written a book, they all love books; and I love that.

Put in your hours. Don't give up. Don't pay attention to all the noise out there. Write. That's all there is. Write. Write often. Don't give up.

Despite having sold the manuscript to A Hard and Heavy Thing, I still need to work "ye ol' day job." My daily work has me writing motions, briefs, memos, etc. for the Wisconsin Innocence Project and the Wisconsin Law School Criminal Appeals Project. I cannot imagine a more rewarding way to put my writing to work.
I'm also working on a bunch of non-fiction essays right now for inclusion on www.wrath-bearingtree.com, which is a website I'm putting together with some other writer friends of mine. Check it out.

I wish I could say that I get inspired to write. The only times I have felt remotely inspired have been while running or while taking a shower. Those are the times where I just don't seem to have a pen handy. That being the case, I simply have to force myself into the chair to put in the hours. Like any work, it takes will power and motivation.

I had two very close friends on my first trip to Iraq--two who are still very close to me, even now that we have all left the service. I wanted to honor them and what they did over there, but I also didn't want the book to be a cliche in which the hero saves the day. In this case--the likely hero turns out to be the one that needs saving. So I conflated my two friends into a singular wounded character, who ends up as the real hero of the story.
