Victoria Murray The idea for my first novel, Live Hate Die, came about as I watched many, many episodes of Ghost Adventures (I know, but I'm addicted to it! Don't judge me!). I always want the ghostly activity to ramp up several notches and get really extreme and dangerous, but it never does. So I invented a paranormal investigation that goes badly wrong. The main character, Jake Devlin, had been floating around in my head for many years and seemed to be a good fit for the story.
Victoria Murray I'm just about to start a new novel, another horror with the working title of 'Attachment'. I don't want to say too much about it at this stage but I hope it will be suitably scary.
Victoria Murray Firstly, read Stephen King's 'On Writing'. It is the best book about the craft of writing that I've ever read and completely changed the way I approached my first novel.

Secondly, if you're going to self publish and you think your manuscript is finished and is absolutely perfect and ready to go, STOP. It isn't. Get it professionally edited. You'll be amazed at all the improvements once it's gone through a couple of drafts with an editor. You'll also be amazed at the amount of typos you missed!
Victoria Murray The best thing about writing is when the story flows out of you almost without you having to think.

It's like watching a film in your head and transcribing what happens. Ideas form spontaneously and you're 'in the zone'. Your characters come to life and start to make decisions on their own. It's the main reason I don't plot out a novel in advance; the pesky characters always change direction and decide to do something else.
