The best thing about being a writer is that it's a way to incorporate observation, imagination, and opinion into a single discipline that draws influence from multiple sources. There is a wonderful sense of satisfaction reaching an end point in writing, even though I could continue to edit a document into eternity if given the chance.

The best way I deal with writer's block is to move on to another section of the book that either needs editing or writing. Sometimes working on a different section can spark the best way to write the blocked section. The act of letting it go and returning to it with fresh eyes can make all the difference.

Growing up in Wyoming I've long had a fascination with Antarctica because it seemed like one place that was more extreme than Wyoming can be on a day with 70-mph winds and ground blizzards. On a good day both places have stunning scenery and beautiful night skies. Add to this the intrigue of hidden worlds like Shangri-La in Lost Horizon, and strong female characters who get to do more than sit on the sidelines, and it led to the idea for this book.
