Kay W. Smith Just write.

Before you write the first word of your first sentence of your first paragraph, you can easily talk yourself out of it. You can easily get distracted trying to perfect the "right" way to write dialogue or create a scene. But here's the real secret of writing: There is no right way to do this. There is only your way of doing it. As long as you stay true to the uniqueness of your voice, the story will unfold exactly the way that it should.
Kay W. Smith I tend to utilize one of two strategies:

A) I try to "will" myself out of it through routine. I set a time to write something - anything - everyday. Even if it sucks. Eventually, if I stay consistent, it will begin to suck a little less day by day, until my writing muse shows up and sprinkles it with fairy dust and sparkles.

B) Most often, I utilize the "art of misdirection". I give myself the permission to relax and think about something else. As I begin to shift my thoughts away from writing to...running...or cleaning (for example), I find that my brain begins to make connections that it had difficulty doing when I was trying to force myself to write. This usually works best for me, as long as I am not distracting myself with reality tv or a glass of wine.
