I write when I need to write, and I don't believe in waiting around for inspiration to strike. Get the story out, and then you can edit to make it really shine. It's rare to get struck with true inspiration from your muse, otherwise people wouldn't speak about it with such awe. A glorious and magical thing when it happens, but it's not terribly often. If I waited for it, or tried to make it happen, I wouldn't get much written. I have plenty of fun with my writing even if I'm not riding a wave of inspiration in a particular writing session.

I love the act of creation, of breathing life into a story. It's this raw, artistic state of being. Sometimes my muse surprises me, and that's the best! I'll be typing and something will just start unfolding that I didn't know was going to happen. It's pretty magical.

Outlining! Just a little bit. I do a 1-2 page outline with bullet points that represent scenes. This helps me know where I'm going and avoid getting writer's block. But since it's a slim outline, I don't hesitate to change it as needed if my muse yanks the story in a different direction! That's actually my favorite part of being a writer, that raw creative process that surprises even me sometimes.

I'm working on a YA high fantasy. This is fun and new, since usually I write adult contemporary fantasy! Can't tell much more than that now... super secret :)
