I jump to another part of the book that is easier to write. I always tell people to start with the acknowledgments to get the writing blood flowing. I also will sometimes go visit a physical place that relates to the story I'm writing.

Write as you talk. Don't write as you think other people want to hear you. Your natural voice is always the most compelling. I write in a casual tone, I use slang, I incorporate humor, I allow my excitement and belief that certain stories are absurd, to come through in my writing.

I surround myself with history. My apartment is filled with presidential signed documents, locks of presidential hair, a painting by Dwight Eisenhower while he was president, and more than 3,000 books. I sit at an old desk, light a candle, and let myself get lost in the stories that have defined our history.

When I was eight years old my parents bought me a book called The Buck Stops Here because they assumed a children's book about presidents would be fun for me. What they didn't expect was that they had to have 8 conversations about death, since I fixated on the 8 pages that talked about a president dying in office. Since then, I have been fascinated by the eight men who were never supposed to be president. When my eldest daughter was born I began to think back to that book and decided I was finally going to tell this story for an adult audience.
