Niko Ford A love of the characters and the way they play off each other. I always loved how the stories were about Holmes but written by Watson, the entire breadth of their investigative experience told from his perspective. I wanted to see how they lived, though, more than simply being limited to how they worked; know the characters as more than detective and doctor. I could either make my own characters based on those tropes or not bother with pretenses and work with the characters I already loved. I chose the later. It was also important to me to provide another take on Watson which was just as dark and complicated as Holmes, neither the moralistic doctor nor obliging lady's man.
Niko Ford The Miners of Metis, the second book in The Adventures of the Late Sherlock Holmes series. Considering a slight horror bent akin to The Hound of the Baskervilles for this one. Really looking to make the most of the "adventure" promise.
Niko Ford Write. No excuses. The idea will never be perfect, the time will never be right, the conditions will never be ideal. Accept imperfection, forgive limitations. Be your biggest fan, not just your worst critic. Just write.
Niko Ford Some of my best writing was done in school while I should have been paying attention to my teachers. The lesson I learned was that life will tell you when it's time to write--whether or not its opportune or appropriate. If I am having trouble writing, then I stop and do something else. In that same way, if my mind bids me to write, I will stop and write. Writing, for me, is an organic thing that shouldn't be forced or constrained. Because of this, I find I encounter writer's block very infrequently.
Niko Ford I think about what I wish I were reading or why a particular book, movie, or television series disappointed me. A lack of satisfaction lets me know where my own interests dwell and informs an opinion on what I should focus on, around, or simply include. I have to write otherwise I suffer from creative constipation so even if the inspiration only leads to a vignette or flash fiction, it's important to get it out.
