J.A. Christy Thank you Carol. I hope you enjoy it - please let me know.
J.A. Christy My most recent book, SmartYellowTM, started off as a crime novel. As I was writing it, I realized that the characters' situations were influenced by class and social control, and that if I magnified this it would show their story better.
I ended up magnifying it so much that it became speculative fiction, a kind of 'what if?' alternate history.
I was also interested in how academic studies are often twisted into a different shape to suit the audience they are mediated to.
J.A. Christy I get inspiration from many different sources. Anything can trigger it, but as a psychologist I'm interested in how people's internal lives influence their external life and their place in society.
I've also been heavily influenced by location and I like to write about the North West of England where I was born and London, where I spend a lot of time.
J.A. Christy I'm currently working on a follow up to SmartYellowTM. It's another speculative fiction novel about a woman whose philosophical journey through life begins in a second hand shop!
I'm also writing a screenplay about a missing child and her family.
J.A. Christy Keep going. Write for your own pleasure and get really involved in your worlds. It's difficult to resist the commercial pull because, after all, everyone wants to succeed, but don't focus on that entirely, enjoy the craft.
Connect with other writers and readers. Persistence pays off. Keep writing!
J.A. Christy The best thing about being a writer is the first ideas, incubating them and getting excited about the story and the world you are about to create. That never gets old or runs out, there's always a new idea that can come to you anytime or anywhere. I've even called my answerphone to when I haven't got a pen and a notebook and told myself the idea so I don't forget it!
J.A. Christy I try to write something different. If I'm involved in a novel or a screenplay, I try a short story. If I really can't write anything I use the time to catch up on films or box sets.
