There has to be a blue-white hot passion. Come up with a beginning middle and end. The rest of the book is a journey the writer makes as he ties all relevant pieces together. Every writer comes about their book differently. Some create outlines, some dictate into a digital recorder, some make little notes about characters and storylines. I am one of the lucky few who can "watch" their story develop within their mind's eye. I see things much like a director of a movie - able to rewind, play forward. I'm also able to move my mind's eye to rotate around a scene left, right, up & down. So I'm able to view from all angles the story I am crafting. There is absolutely nothing like being in the "zone" writing non-stop till you finish the chapter.
Now I can't do this all the time but when it does happen it is a joy to behold.

I wrote to someone earlier:
Look up and read the word "perseverance" even if you know what it means. Read it 50 times in a 50 day period. Then look up the word "discipline" and then the word "devotion".
An aspiring writer will doubt themselves in one way or another at some point. The weight of writing itself can be cumbersome and a dread of writing may overcome their earnest efforts.
Hence the combination of the three words perseverance, discipline and devotion will help the aspiring author breach through their trepidations.

Humbly said: "To have people read your book(s) and come away with something."

I myself embraced the discipline of embracing vocabulary words. A hunger to comprehend the vast amount available in the english language. Of course to learn comes easy to retain is quite another thing.
Writing is a craft and in a way an art form. Begin here if you are young and build upon your craft in a way that will help you form your own identity.
Afterwards humble yourself and begin the journey of asking/inquiring about all aspects of writng, publishing and marketing.

Currently I am ghost writing for an old friend from a company we both mutually worked for more than a decade ago. It's a comedy that transforms itself into a dark comedy.

Actually the book has 2 Co-Authors. John & I came together for two reasons, we were good friends and we wanted to write a book. We came up with an agreement on a way to interrupt one another as we put a story together. Call it a lightning round of brainstorming. We first began the meanderings for the idea of a story we thought would be interesting. Believe it or not the very first idea, was an alien race would wage war and bring mankind down to it's knees by dragging an asteroid behind it's mothership only to hurdle it towards earth. John & I, ran through several lightning rounds of thought. The keyword to politely interrupt the other's idea was the word "flash". In the course of three days we ended up with the novel "Resplendent Emulation". As you can see, the ideas and thoughts went through many twists turns and branches much like the proverbial lightning bolt. It seemed the story in the novel was destined to happen. As if an unseen force directed us along our deliberations for a good story. I hope this answered your question.
