There was a distancing physically and emotionally between my mother's youngest sister and the rest of the family. Her departure seemed abrupt, and the smoke screen story was that was the only way she could separate from the close-knit family of origin. I filled in all the nooks and crannies with romantic notions of why she left, what she did, and how she ended up with her life. Now that generation is gone. A few of the female cousins have been drawing closer in recent years, and we're starting to put the story together.
