When I learned that my ancestry includes a small percentage of Irish and Spanish DNA, I began to imagine how that could have happened since the vast majority of my ancestors were from Eastern Europe.
Could a dashing sailor from the Spanish Armada that wrecked off the west coast of Ireland in 1588 have been rescued, nursed back to health, and loved by an Irish woman? Or, more darkly, did one or more of the explorers rape her, leaving her to bear my ancestor nine months later? There's a story here.
