To quote Johnny Five from the campy 80's movie Short Circuit (yes, I'm showing my age): Need input! It's hard to make something from nothing. If I'm stuck on something I put it aside, get out and live, then approach the topic from a different angle. There is often more than one route to get to a given destination. Sometimes you have to head off in another direction to inspire your brain to 'recalculate'.

For me, it's hearing about how something I wrote touched or inspired someone in a positive way. Knowing that one of my ideas has had an effect on someone's life is a powerful rush that cannot be duplicated elsewhere.

When you're not writing, you should be reading. Learn about how to craft your words in ways that engage the mind and don't insult the reader's intelligence. You don't have to copy anyone's style to present your own voice in a professional way. And as always, put your heart into it. That's something you can offer that no one else can.

My own personal style is to combine the wonder of travel with a sense of humor. In practical terms, that means that when I travel, I'm not only thinking about what to write, but what I find funny about it. From there it's a matter of polishing the jokes to match the practical information I'm seeking to impart. Not every attempt at humor hits the target, but it's my hope that I get close enough to make readers laugh - and nothing ingratiates you more to an audience than making them feel good!

For years I have written for my own Trip Accomplice blog, dispensing travel advice and sharing my own take on destinations. At one point, one particular friend and reader suggested that I compile that heap of information I'd been dispensing piecemeal onto the web into a definitive collection. That sparked an initiative to cull and refine the best of my previous posts and develop others. This book is the result of one idle conversation that launched months of dedicated work.
