The conceptual basis of THE ROAD BACK FROM BROKEN came together over the course of a couple of years, starting in late 2011. I'd been thinking of giving another try to writing a novel, and with the war in Afghanistan gaining momentum as the President ordered a "surge" of US forces there, I knew that I wanted to examine what happened when those troops come home and rejoin their families. I've been listening to veterans' stories for years, and have observed how the wartime experiences of people in my family affected their relationships with their wives/children decades after they came home. When I started cobbling together the ideas for ROAD back in 2012/2013, there weren't a lot of novels about the war in Afghanistan, or about the American families affected by that war. In ROAD, I set out to explore that.

I get to write the books I want to read, which for a reader with interests as eclectic as mine, is huge. It may sound somewhat pathological, but as a writer of fiction, I have to delve deeply into the minds and lives of the characters I write about, and I get to form interesting relationships with them. Lastly, being a writer has given me an opportunity to meet all kinds of people who love books and stories as much as I do.

I'm currently working on WHAT FURY LEFT BEHIND, the sequel to THE ROAD BACK FROM BROKEN. Without spoiling too much of the ending of ROAD, FURY takes place at Fort Bragg and in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It picks up three years after most of the events of ROAD. I'm pretty excited about continuing the story of Fitz, Jenn, Ryan and company.
