Dove Winters Hi, Sean! Usually, I'm a plotter. I like to have at least a general idea of where I'm going. For my Ember trilogy though, I wrote without plotting out anything, and I was pleasantly surprised with how it turned out! I think the journey into each book is different and unique and you just have to do what feels right for the story.
Ideas come from everywhere, but most of mine come from listening to music. I can't listen to music without imagining something, and sometimes characters or scenes or entire plots just happen. I drive my kids crazy sometimes when I strike an idea and listen to the same song over and over (and over!) again! Thanks for asking!
Dove Winters Hi, K. B.! Thank you for asking! My main character is usually the first thing that comes to me when I have a new idea. It's important to me that my characters be relatable to readers. I also value kindness in my main characters (at least in the heroes, maybe not so much the villains!). A little bit of kindness can go a long way! Otherwise, I let the characters develop as I write the story. I never quite know who they are until the story is written!
Dove Winters Looks like I have you scheduled for July 12! I had just a couple ahead of you. I will be in touch! New posts each Friday.
Dove Winters Hi, Mona! Yes--right now, as a matter of fact! I've had an idea bouncing around for a few months. It came to me while listening to a song I heard on a movie trailer. But it's a very personal story and whenever I sit down to work on it...it's like the story just isn't quite ready to tell itself yet. I may need to let it ripen a bit before trying again. Thanks for the question!
Dove Winters Thank you for asking, Michelle! My favorite book to write (so far!) was The Wind of Chicanery (book two after Ember of the Planet). The writing experience for the whole Ember trilogy was so different from any of my other ones. I connected with the characters in a way I haven't before, and the whole outcome of the book changed because of their influence. I had so much fun and shed so many tears and I hope everyone else will love the story like I do!
Dove Winters Thanks for the question, Theresa! Inspiration comes from a lot of places: life, movies or TV shows, other books I've read. One of my best sources of inspiration is music. I cannot listen to a song without putting a story to it of some kind. Most of the big scenes in my books come from listening to some song or soundtrack. I often listen to them on repeat until my family starts to complain :-) Everyone has a different creative process!
