I'm into non-fiction books these days - Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Who knew :)

Hmmm...I'm pretty much an open book, a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type of person. But a potential plot that's been in the backburner is a sort of what-if about my grandparents. When my grandparents were in their 20's they lived through the horrors of World War II. They told me stories about where they were, what they did, how they lived during those hard times. Now that all of them had passed on, I want to honour them and their sacrifice by writing about them.

(view spoiler)[I was on the deck at the cottage watching a family enjoy their time at the beach. The kids were young and they were all having fun. The day was glorious, the water was warm and the wind was blowing gently. It was a perfect day all in all. Suddenly, I thought: what would be the most tragic thing that could happen to this family? Almost instantly, I realized nothing could compare to the loss of a child. (hide spoiler)]

I love to read. Reading takes me to places and adventures and roller coaster emotions I wouldn't have been able to access. I learned a lot of things from reading, not just facts, but human emotions and conditions. Those were invaluable gifts from the authors of those books. I want to give the same gift to readers of my work.

Apart from promoting book one, The Soul Shepherd and the Threshold, I'm starting to work on book two. Michael's adventure does not end in The Soul Shepherd and the Threshold. It's only just begun.

Read, read, and read. Write, write, edit, write, edit and edit some more. Then read again.

You learn about yourself more and more. As you develop your characters - their wishes and desires, their deepest secrets or regrets - you realize which of their values you share, and which ones, even with a gun to your head, you'll never adopt.

I take a stroll (when it's not minus thirty degrees Celsius outside) around the neighbourhood. And I read books or any articles, which are not even remotely related to what I'm working on. Sometimes I just watch a movie or a TV show. All these help me to detach from my work, sort of a reassurance (or permission) that it's okay to take a break.
