Christopher Holshek Well, it’s like they say: "One thing leads to another." I explain a lot how I came to this book project in the introduction, which people can read online at Inkshares.com. It all started out as a motorcycle ride to mark my retirement from the Army and process those 30 years of service, mostly overseas, but also discover and reconnect with the land of my identity. The Project on National Security Reform, where I was doing some work, asked me to write a blog to capture my thoughts on what it means to be an American in today’s world – because I thought, on both personal and national levels, that was the main question Americans are going to have to find an answer to move forward. In truth, it’s a question every generation must find an answer to. So like John Steinbeck did when I was born, I decided to take my turn at it. Then my little blog became a little booklet, which people began to tell me: "Chris, this is a book with a great message – write it!" So there you have it.
Christopher Holshek Other writers, when I was a kid. Reading begets writing, then going out and having interesting experiences that compel you to share what you've learned from them.
Christopher Holshek Organizing and conducting the National Service Ride, for which Travels with Harley is the message platform - about citizenship, service, and engagement in and beyond America. Check out the website at: www.nationalserviceride.net, on social media, and spread the word!
Christopher Holshek Don't sell yourself short, don't think you're going to be Hemingway overnight; and don't quit on yourself. Like love and marriage, it's an ordeal as much as it is a joy. But the former gives greater value to the latter.
Christopher Holshek Bringing up from inside the depth of your experiences and what you've learned from them. As I wrote in the introduction to Travels with Harley, writing the book was the third, unexpected journey of this project.
Christopher Holshek Great question! I invoke what Churchill once said: "When you find yourself in hell, keep going." So just keep at it - you can't always wait for inspiration, and when it happens, it's often at an inopportune time. So keep a notepad handy for such moments and capture those key phrases and ideas. Best of luck!
