I have been so amazed with this world and the places I've been, I can't imagine wasting time (to me, anyway) in a make-believe world when the real one is so grand. And there are so many wonderful places I haven't been or seen yet. I can't imagine wanting to pretend, when the real world is out there!

Actually, I have taken everything off my list until I have written a sequel. I have no time to read! It's terrible!

The time between riotous community events when my father, a Presbyterian minister, would drag me to meetings about racial justice and when I finally realized what he was trying to teach me.

I research archaeological sites for new info on how my characters lived. It inspires me to tell stories based on these everyday pieces of my character's lives. It's really amazing how basic tenets of human behavior have remained constant for 6000 years.

Know your background story. Don't dwell on just one character (unless you're writing a character story), there are too many people around a single character that make up the story. Don't leave them out. They likely made the main character that particular individual more than anything else.

I've experienced writer's block - it isn't easy to shake. I have noticed that I like to do other things when I should be writing. Avoidance. I have to make myself sit with my notepad and wait. Sometimes nothing comes to me, but just sitting helps break the spell! It eventually breaks and I'm off again.

My first book was a group of genealogy stories, covering 300 years, about my ancestors' lives. What happened to them and how their life was spent. However, with my new book - a historical novel - I can still write about what happened to people, but give them the outcome I wanted them to have.

A sequel. I've sold over 100 books, so I decided to write another one. I would feel that I wasted all this research if I didn't pursue it further. Many readers wanted to know what will happen to the people in the village, more than just in an epilogue.

I started my book after reading a newspaper headline about the last volcanic eruption in France in 4040BC. My first thought - how do they know the year? Several months past and other questions rumbled through my head. Could someone have witnessed that eruption? I did a little internet investigating and confirmed it. The next question - who - took five years of research. Irritated, then exasperated, my wife persuaded me to write a story about what I had discovered and I found that life 6050 years ago was quite interesting.
