You're in control of everything you write. It can be accepted by readers or not, but you have the opportunity to do it your way all the way.

Write about what matters to you. Dramatize your values by creating plots that keep your theme(values) alive and characters who succeed or fail in their fictional lives in order to provide examples for real life individuals.

My next novel, which is a modern day Mafia story revolving around a Mafia daughter who defies her "Boss of all Bosses" father. Unlike most mafia novels, mine is un-glamourized, un-romanticized and dramatizes just how many innocent people are hurt via the evils of organized crime that goes on day by day, and how many people (by making movies, TV programs, etc.) lull the general public into thinking this is all very exciting when it is deadly-- Of course, there is also a great love story as well. . .

I have no trouble being inspired because the great goal of my writing (both fiction and nonfiction) is to open doors of ideas and thoughts to my readers in order to encourage them to ponder their own lives, improve them, and enrich them for greater personal joy and happiness.

Although true tragedies exist, I observed that most people's problems and lack of happiness were self generated out of their own bad choices, or failure to choose, giving over to emotions, desire for peer or family acceptance, fame, money, professional success, etc. so I wanted to dramatize a variety of conflicts that require choice in order to provide ideas as to how to improve real life choices and make people more in control and satisfied with their lives.
