My good friend Robert Silk, who lives in the Florida Keys, wrote a magazine article few years ago, that researches the history of illegality and corruption in the higher echelons of power of local government. During a focal point in the 1950's there was a particularly colorful conflict between local state representative Bernie Papy, and a Miami Herald columnist, Stephen Trumbull. These were classic 1950's characters. I was speaking to Robert about how much it felt like a classic old movie to me. It might still become one. Robert gave me his blessing as I began musiing about fictionalizing it.

I was reading Mark Vonnegut's introduction his dad Kurt's post mortem collection, "Armageddon in Retrospect." At one point he says, "Reading and writing are subversive acts. What they subvert is the notion that things have to be the way they are." When I read that I thought, yeah, that's why I'm a writer.
