Rachel Afi Quinn I wrote about women in the Dominican Republic because I had the sense that I could learn from their experiences of race and gender and living in Santo Domingo and interviewing women who wanted to talk to me about their experiences certainly taught me a lot. So did paying attention to the visual context that I was in as a landscape of racial signifiers. The context allowed me to explore my own experiences of racial ambiguity as well as the unique aspects of Dominican society and culture that others were willing share with me during the time I lived there.
Rachel Afi Quinn I'm trying my hand at biography and thinking about what I've learned over the years about blurring genres, looking at the social factors that shape the experiences of race and gender in a black mixed race woman's life (a theme) and how she wrote her life versus how others chose to write it.
