Well, there are several that rise to the top. These include "Those Who Save Us," "The Joy Luck Club," and "Empress Orchid." As you can see, I love historical fiction. It's been my favorite genre for years, since I reading many of the John Jakes novels when I was a teen.

It doesn't take much. I really just need quiet time, down time, and the ideas come to me. Then it's a matter of getting them recorded and organized before I forget! A walk in the woods surrounding my house, or a visit to the farm where I grew up, always help, too. Recently, my mom and I reminisced together, and a few new ideas emerged.

A second chapter book about Hattie Mae Bramble is in the works. Right now, my plan is to highlight on-farm adventures tied to the family's out-sized garden. Unlike the first Hattie Mae book, a male sidekick is likely to figure prominently in this story!

Well, just get started. Make yourself sit down and write on a regular basis, even if you're only producing a little bit each time. Begin by making outlines that break down bigger story lines. Then, flesh out those outlines into chapters, working a bit at a time.

Using personal creativity and being able to completely "be myself" are the best aspects of being a writer. I love to let my mind wonder, search old memories, and connect stories when I have a moment of downtime. It's very exciting to me to see ideas begin to fit together and slowly become a cohesive tale.

A lot of my writing is based on childhood memories, so perusing old photo scrapbooks brings inspiration. But the best way to clear my head is by taking a walk in our timber, or playing with my cats (Velvet and Kayden) or our golden retriever, Oakley.
