Paul Platt It actually started 7 years ago with another concept that I just couldn't get to work out. It's a good bit, but not enough substance for a full book. I did create 2 characters, Mitosis and Lady Splendid, while working on that idea and Sudden Onset Evolution evolved from there. There was one night over beers where a friend of mine and I came up with an idea that we were shocked hadn't been done before and that became a major plot device for this book.
Paul Platt Motivation is sometimes an issue, between work and needing down time, my motivation sometimes fails me. I get inspired by my friends who tell me that I should write that or tell me to keep it up. They want to read my stuff, so I hope that others will too. I also have my favorite movies or books that I watch or read to remind me where I want to get to. I also have some bad books that I'll read sections of that inspire me to be sure I do better than that!
Paul Platt I'm outlining my ideas for a sequel to Sudden Onset Evolution. The ending of the book changed as I was writing it and lead me to an idea for a sequel I didn't have before. I'm also a fan of doing barroom karaoke, so I have been toying around with a comedy about some of funny things I have seen happen. I have an interesting idea for a format of doing it, but no actual story idea as of yet.
Paul Platt Just write it, silly. Find time to write even if it means deleting things off your DVR or missing an hour of sleep a night. It'll be worth it in the long run.
Paul Platt I have fun writing, so that's the best part. It's also a great venting of issues that I have in my personal life. Many times I will take a personal conflict or situation and work it out through my characters. This has a cathartic aspect, but also helps me write what I know so I can put additional realism into the writing.
Paul Platt I found the best way was to try to brainstorm any ideas or concepts that I wanted to add in and then try to create an outline of how I can get to those points. Usually that would lead me to an idea and I would just start writing and the block would go away.
