I always wanted to write an Indiana Jones in space kind of adventure, centered around a gruff sheriff with a very religious sidekick.
Then, when I had the idea for an alien artifact with mysterious powers, I thought that would be a perfect adventure for the character of Joe Corbit.
The rest just wrote itself.
