Monique Amado Write every day, even if you feel you don't have anything to say. If you feel like you can't write a page, write a paragraph. If you can't write a paragraph, write a sentence. If you can't write a sentence, write a word. If you can't write a word, write one letter. If you just start, more will come. Don't wait for inspiration. Don't wait till you're "ready." Ready doesn't really exist. Don't worry about how "great" it is, how good you are at it, and turn off that annoying voice that says, "Who is really going to want to read this?" You can always edit or change things later. Just begin. Maybe you start just writing for yourself, to get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. The act of writing with pen and paper is hugely healing and therapeutic in itself. (For me, it's a big part of how I pray.) Even if you write something on a post-it note, or a 3 x 5 card, it counts. Give yourself credit for having written at all. And then build up to more writing over time. Julia Cameron's "Morning Pages" changed my life - 3 pages every day. Once I started, I couldn't stop. Now, if I don't write for a few days, I feel "clogged up." I don't think of it as a discipline, so much as a way of life, a habit, like brushing my teeth, prayer, stretching, morning tea.
Monique Amado I don't believe in writer's block.
Monique Amado Lothlorien in Middle Earth. I'd hang out with elves, make music, eat plant-based foods. You know, elvish things.
Monique Amado Hi Gordon,
Thanks for being my first question-asker. About the R. Foster book, it was one I had wanted to read for many years and finally did. I can definitely see why it's considered a classic.
As far as putting poetry on Good Reads, they have an ongoing competition where people post their poems and once the moderators pick their favorites and narrow it down to I think 5, then the readers vote on them. I've never entered but have thought about it. Yes, I've written a lot of poetry. Let me know if you find the contest and post to it. I'd be interested to read yours.
I noticed 2 of your favorite poets are also 2 of mine--C. Rossetti and W. Blake. :)
Blessings to you...
Monique
