By reading, and watching well-written TV and films. Just having a random idea can sometimes be incredibly inspiring. I'm learning that inspiration is not what writes a novel, though. It helps, but it's keeping a routine, and writing every day that puts words on the page. Inspiration is far too fickle to get the job done.

It's a wonderful way to channel one's creativity, and it's fulfilling to be able to incorporate other passions into the writing. Being able to work whenever and wherever is very freeing.
