I’d probably need a bit more information about your question, Skye. Do you mean best moment while writing or best moment in terms of a book being published?

Hi John,
Thanks for getting in touch. ‘They Scream in the Dark’ is a standalone story which I haven’t published on any platform as yet. It forms one story in a series I’m developing on John Absolom as a character. There’s another story called ‘North of Lonesome Creek’ which features in my collection, ‘Beasts, Brutes and Abominations’. This book is available on Amazon and the story has Absolom feature as the main protagonist along with his erstwhile female sidekick.
So, the short answer is no, there isn’t really a place to post a review of TSITD, but knowing you appreciated the story means a lot. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy one of my other books and be able to find time to leave a review. Thanks ever so much or your interest.
Best,
Tom

I’ve not listened a massive amount to either of these, Andre. But of the two I would probably go for Avenged Sevenfold. Part of the reason is that Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater played with them for a few shows and I am a big fan of his. There’s a bit of a connection there. Are you a fan of both?

Ooh! First time I had an author reply to me (apart from Edgar Allen Poe - now that was creepy). I won't wash this keyboard ever again.
Anyway, I do ad Ooh! First time I had an author reply to me (apart from Edgar Allen Poe - now that was creepy). I won't wash this keyboard ever again.
Anyway, I do admire both of them. I wouldn't say I'm a fan - more of an addict. Although Mastodon blotted their copybook when a couple of them decided to take part as extras in Game of Thrones. ...more

I don't mind being labelled as a horror or dark fantasy writer, although I recognise that with this labelling comes the odd pitfall or two. But why dark fiction? Many authors have tackled this question, including Clive Barker, Stephen King, Jack Wallen and Neil Gaiman, to name but a few. I'm going to go with the following, for the purposes of this question: good fiction should release empathy in ourselves as a result of the poetry, characterisation, description and setting of the story. If we are more able to understand matters from an alternative perspective, then to me this makes us better people and ultimately a better society. Sometimes it's good to view things from the Dark side, not in a prurient way, but in order for us to experience a range of emotions. Dark fiction stretches this premise to the extremes and allows us to question our beliefs, philosophy and ethics. Does this dwelling on the horrific and terrifying lead us into a spiral of despair, futile thinking or something worse? There is no evidence, sociological, scientific or otherwise that this is true. All I know, from my own reading, observation and writing, is that this willingness to face ones Metaphorical demons helps me cope with the darkness of the real world we live in. There is more I could say on this matter, but do check out what the authors I have mentioned above say. It makes enlightening reading.

Too many to mention! I'm currently reading John Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath.' After that, I'm going to attempt a great undertaking: House of Leaves. I've been lent a copy and already I'm finding it intriguing beyond measure.

I guess the main mystery of my life is why our grey cat keeps staring at something behind us, yet when we turn round there's nothing there. Enough for a novel? I don't know - perhaps a novella?

Audrey and Geoff from rules of engagement. He is hilarious and totally self-absorbed while she tolerates this with infinite patience.

The title 'Defiled Earth' was a very contrived affair. Being as poor as a church mouse, I knew I wouldn't be able to afford a special commission for a book cover to accompany a collection of short stories I was finishing. So I went on one of those template-approach, generic book cover sites and browsed through what was on offer - none seemed to match any of my stories. So I took a different tack. I chose what I thought was a really cool cover, thought of a few possible titles, then wrote the story to fit. That was how the title story came about and I was quite proud of what I produced in the end. Still, the final verdict is up to you dear reader.
