Mason Thomas Tricking questions to answer--it's different for each book. But it always starts with this small spark, a tiny little "huh" moment that gets me thinking, and it'll keep poking at me until I start to do something with it. Sometimes, it's a concept, like a unique feature in the world--the magic system for example. Other times it's a character idea. In my latest, I wondered what it would be like for gay rugby player to enter a fantasy world. I was curious how the ruggedness of rugby would translate into a hard and violent medieval world. Once I have a general direction I want to go, other fragments of ideas tend to coalesce around that core idea. There's this cascading effect then, as ideas build on ideas. And before I know it, a story arc forms in my head.
Mason Thomas I hope so. I'm waiting to hear the word from Dreamspinner.
Mason Thomas I am currently in the revision and editing stages of a young adult fantasy novel with LGBT characters that I hope to get sent out this summer. Very excited about this one--I'm in love with the premise. I'm also in the first draft stages of a new stand-alone fantasy romance that takes place in an entirely new world.
Mason Thomas Write every day. Every single day. Even on those days when you aren't feeling it. You need to sit at the computer, get out of your own way and muscle through it...and the words will come. Set a goal for yourself and make sure you meet it. Also, when you're writing a draft, allow it to suck. It will suck--and that's okay. It's not going to stay sucky, because you're going to go back and fix it. The important thing in the beginning is to get your story out of your head and onto paper.
Mason Thomas No. Although both novels occur in the same world, they have different protagonists and both are stand alone stories.
Mason Thomas The main character, Auraq, was someone I wanted to explore for a while. I liked the idea of writing a story from a dark and brooding character's point of view. I also wanted this one to have a different tone than my first book. The main plot evolved out the idea of magical tattoos.
