I would have to go to the fictitious 'west country' of Elizabeth Goudge's Smoky House and The Little White Horse books, as these were the stories that inspired my love of reading, with their 'hills like upturned pudding basins'.

Hi Caroline and thank you so much for getting in touch. The Night Raid is published in hardback and on e-readers (Kindle etc.) on 27th July and will be out in paperback on 14th December (you can pre-order on Amazon).
I'm still writing book 4 (in fact, I'm just taking a break between scenes as I type!) but, assuming the publishers stick to the same schedule then book 4 will be out in hardback in Summer 2018.
Hope this helps
Best, Clare x

This summer I'm going to read all of The Cazalet Chronicles (recommended by my agent). I also want to nab Su Bristow's Sealskin from my mum (I got her a signed copy for Mother's Day - Su won The Exeter Novel Prize with Sealskin the year before I won with The Gunner Girl, but it's only just been published this year, and I've heard lots of good things about it). I also still want to read Leaving Before the Rains Come by Alexandra Fuller. I bought a copy for my big sister's birthday the other year, with the express intention of stealing it from her once she'd read it (because I adored Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight, her debut) - hmmm, are you sensing a pattern here, with the books-as-presents thing?! So I need to plan a trip down to the South West to see various family members and steal back presents to supplement my summer bookshelves! :)

Hi Caroline, sorry for delay in replying - it's partly because I am working on a new book, and I've just been to Berlin for some 'optical research' (looking at stuff, basically).
My third book, The Night Raid, is out in hardback/ebook in July and I'm currently working on the first draft of Book 4 (yes, that's the title at the moment!).
Book 4 as it is now (and things may change through the writing process) takes place in two timelines: Germany in 1945 as the iron curtain falls, and in 1989 as the iron curtain rises. I don't want to say too much more for fear of jinxing it, but it's fascinating to research and write.
Hope this helps! Clare x

Good question! I shall have to say two characters from my new book, The English Agent, who became unwillingly entangled, because I became so enmeshed with their relationship as I was writing it. But, I can't say any more than that in case of spoilers - you'll have to read the book to find out what happens to them... x

My mother-in-law was a teenage soldier in WW2, on the anti-aircraft guns in London. Sadly, she passed away before I had the chance to meet her. There was always a bit of a mystery surrounding her, though: my husband knew of no family on her side, and had no information about her childhood - it was as if her life started on the very day she joined the army. And for me, that mystery was in itself a good start for a story.

Reading biographies, visiting museums and re-enactment days, looking at old films and photographs - but often the ideas just come once the pen starts moving across the paper.

One of the characters from my debut novel The Gunner Girl has a storyline that takes her into the next novel, which links London and Paris in the middle of WW2.

There's no such thing. Some days writing is hard, some days it's easy, that's all.
