Whitney Fay Movies and music, hands down. I create a LOT of movie scenes in my head when I hear certain songs. I can imagine the plot and how everything goes down while that song is playing as if it were playing in an actual movie. From there the idea just kind of grows on its own. With Good Riddance, we had the entire fictional movie cast before we were finished writing the book. It just helps to imagine exactly what the people look like when I'm writing.
Whitney Fay Currently, Collin and I are tossing around two separate ideas for the next book, but the ideas are still in the super top secret level of clearance. :)
Whitney Fay I just write no matter what. With Good Riddance, half of the stuff I would come up with I would end up deleting because it was just terrible. Eventually, the better ideas and the better dialogue would start to come into focus and I would do that until I got the writing where I wanted it. Collin was really helpful because he would always encourage me to just keep writing. He had more faith in me than I did most of the time!
Whitney Fay Collin and I share a love for 80s pop culture and originally Good Riddance started out dealing with a high school in the 80s, but then we knew we wanted kind of a flashback feel to the story. To make things easier we went with present-day and 90s high school flashbacks. It's filled with a lot of fun pop culture references and we sort of built the book around that.
