K.M. Wray Looking ahead to 2021, I’ve been busy working on a series which I hope to launch later this year (planning for the first book, Twilight’s Curse, to come out in May).

When I first imagined this series, I saw a woman with tattoos of daggers on her forearms that would slip into her hands and become her weapons which she needed to use for fighting. The picture was vivid, so with a little exploration the series started to develop. But that’s just a little teaser.
K.M. Wray No, I don't enjoy horror.
K.M. Wray I take a rest and work on something else. Usually I work on a different manuscript or editing and then I'm able to come back to the project and keep writing.
K.M. Wray I get lost in the writing and the worlds I create. It's a lot of fun.
K.M. Wray Learn and do! Take time to learn about how to write a good story. This means reading, practicing your craft and taking classes. You need to learn how to craft a good story before publishing. That being said, write stories! Write the novels in your heart and find a good editor to help you once you think you have something. Your first few manuscripts will need a lot of work and rewriting and reworking. However, as you keep learning and writing, you'll get better and you'll not only be writing, but publishing and helping others.
K.M. Wray Inspiration comes from the world around me. It could be in something a person says, an image in my mind or something I see. A recent example took place yesterday. I was out cross-country skiing and the frost was beautiful. It made think of the legendary fantasy character 'Jack Frost' who is usually considered a nemesis. However, frost is one of the most beautiful depictions of winter. It started me thinking. Maybe frost is actually good but has a acquired a bad reputation through no fault of their own.

Once an idea hits, I play with it and start asking questions. If enough comes, it works into a book. If not, It gets shelved. I'll play around with my 'Jack Frost' idea and see if anything comes of it.
K.M. Wray It was a few years ago. I was hanging out with friends asking them for what they thought would be a good story idea when one member of the group suggested, ‘why don’t you write a story about a dragon and a drum?’ We’d just finished watching a local performance of traditional Japanese drumming, so perhaps it influenced his thinking. However, the idea stayed with me.

When I started brainstorming for Tully’s story, I saw a young woman who was perhaps around twenty. She lived on one side of a barrier and had a dragon on the other side. She’d hear his heart beat (drum-like) and it’d call to her. The dragon’s drum-like heart beat never made it into the book but there is a touch of it in the original first scene (which is now chapter 4). The first draft of Hidden was written in a flurry over the Labor Day weekend that same year for the 3 Day Novel Writing Contest. I fell in love with Tully and her journey, so I contacted my editor to help me explore the story more.
