Andrew Boylan I like to keep myself at arm's length from most of the locations in the books I read. I read dark literature. These are not places I would like to travel to outside the safety of the page.
Andrew Boylan Odysseus and Penelope.
I like the long suffering couples.
Also, I want someone to write the story of what is life like two years after Odysseus's return.
(By extension, my tie for favorite couple is Leopold and Molly Bloom.)
Andrew Boylan First of all, I've started a Goodreads blog about how SACRIFICE came into being. So if the genesis of my debut novel is of interest check out the blog. I will say this much I got the idea for my most recent book by pouring over New Mexico history in the Santa Fe Public Library.
Andrew Boylan I don't wait for inspiration. I start writing and let inspiration catch up.
Andrew Boylan Making my own schedule.
Of course this is a tricky advantage. Writing is the easiest thing in the world to procrastinate over. Making your own schedule is very different from not having a schedule. You have to be extra hard on yourself. You have to be disciplined. Writing demands an incredible amount of time. Be prepared to put in the hours. I wrote for over twelve years before one project made it into the world. That is a lot of time to pound away at the key board. Very few people get lucky and hit that first book, screenplay, story out of the park. Most overnight success stories were built on a decade of work.
Andrew Boylan Find a mentor. I had been writing every day for over five years before I found a mentor. I'll say I wish I could have found a mentor day one. What I learned from a writer who had already been through years of trial and error were invaluable.
Andrew Boylan I am currently working on a new novel. It is a horror/thriller but with a very different local, characters, and subject matter. It is a twist on the Faust story. Goethe is one of my favorite writers bar none.
As for specifics, I will say this much it is a mother/daughter story set in Hollywood. It deals with the world of B-movies, and the actresses who become stars but have a very difficult time transitioning to A-list movies.
