Hi Megha. I think characters and locations are what impart soul to stories. Writers such as Jhumpa Lahiri, portray their characters so beautifully that one can relate to every single character in their books. If you read the works of Amitava Ghosh you will realize that he does a lot of research about places (geography and history). All these elements impart a credibility to the story and readers tend to lose themselves in the plot. So basically 3Ps. People & Places and Plot (how they are stitched together).

For me writing is generally a realization. It can be a result of an observation, a conversation or a thought. I think all of us would agree that once we undergo a realization we feel like expressing it. Some people like to sing, so like to paint and some simply update their social media status. I love to express my thoughts through short stories.

The Line Reader is a compilation of short stories which were written over a period of time. As a youngster I had the opportunity to travel and mingle with people from different parts of India. This helped me experience the diversity of the country. At times I was thoroughly amused by people and their tales. These interactions provided me ample content for my short stories.
