Amanda Labonté I used to go for a walk or do something to give my brain a break, but last year I went to a wonderful workshop with writer Joan Sullivan and she taught this technique called 'circling'. The idea is that most writer's block is a result of getting lost in the story. Journaling about your story can bring you back to the reason you were writing it in the first place, often leading to a renewed sense of purpose. I usually find this works for me.
Amanda Labonté The idea first came to me while I was driving to work and didn't really have time to do anything with it. When I finally started writing, the one thing that really helped the story take shape was the setting. The Cape Shore is a real (and I would argue magical) place and that helped bring the story together in my head.
Amanda Labonté I am currently working on the sequel to Call of the Sea. It will once again follow Alex and Lia on their continuing adventures. Return to the Sea will be available from Engen Books in April 2018!
