I walked into a historic site one day and came out a writer. It literally has become the rabbit hole where I feel as though I fell into some other dimension and my story of Ben and Lucy Stephenson is the result. Both the historic site, where I now dress up and give tours, as well as the story world I've built are places I get to play and escape my own real world problems for a while.

I love history and those obscure stories of people and events in the past that deserve their own tellings. But story ideas are everywhere and I can't escape them. I find inspiration in the most mundane aspects of life from talking the dog for a walk to shopping for groceries or my commute to work.

Now that my first novel in the Stephenson House Chronicles (Across Unstill Waters) I need to move on to the second book and dig out the rough draft which I started while still working on book 1. I'm one of those writers who can work on more than one project at once.

Write what you love and don't worry about what sells at the moment. Trends change all the time, but if you aren't loving your story and writing it for you, the reader, first, nothing else will matter.

My best solution for dealing with writer's block is to keep reading. Nothing gets the creative juices flowing better than to pick up a book and start reading. It could be short stories, genre novels or classics. All that matters is I'm back inside someone's story world and that usually gets ideas flowing for my own story world again.
