I had the idea to write this book in the early 2000s. I thought it would be a great topic for a novel to explore what would happen if people could change their genes using recombinant DNA research. After I started writing I stopped because it seemed far fetched. I then began reading newspaper articles about CRISPR and its genetic engineering capabilities in 2014, and started writing again. I spent a lot of time researching the science (I have a BA in chemistry) and tried to deal with the ethical issues and potential bad actors. I also wanted it to be a thriller and added elements of international trade and espionage by people who want to control this explosive technology. I hope everyone who reads it learns about this very real and scary technology, and enjoys the book and its characters.
