Read a bad book. Listen to a song with no lyrics on repeat. Sit trapped in a place where I have nothing but time and my thoughts to stew.

I've got a number of story ideas that I've written out bare-bones drafts of, but the devil is always in the details, and I've been drifting from plot to plot, writing and rewriting to find the right voice for each.

It helps to steep your stories in details that you know or remember. Things from your past and present can be tweaked to build the world you're trying to describe. Visualize what you want your readers to see, and then describe it to them. It can also be useful to tell the story to someone else verbally, get accustomed to telling it, like you're describing an actual situation you experienced. Think of it like your favorite anecdote, so that you have refined all the important details and weeded out the unimportant ones.

It's actually six years worth of ideas, most that culminated from reading or listening to lots of horror stories, then thinking a lot of "what if"-type questions. Sometimes, it was a news article that got me thinking, and sometimes, it was just a sort of "bolt out of the blue" moment. Having a dull job and a lot of time to sit, think, and listen to old time radio horror dramas helped.
