I felt like Althea wasn't a loser so much as a broken woman with the chance to finally heal and change the trajectory of the past. Thanks for reading!

No, but I have had relatives from the area! I should go there and do a little research, shouldn't I?

There was a scary old, falling apart house at the top of my street for many years when I was a girl. I was scared to death of it, as it was creepy and overgrown and looked haunted. I do think someone lived there but as many times as I staked out the place, I never caught sight of them. I'd love to know the real story. It's since been torn down!

Hi Marie,
I'm thrilled you enjoyed the book and I thank you for reading. The story is based in Alabama, my home state in the southern US. The story is entirely fictional - not based on a true story, but simply something I dreamed up. I love coming up with characters and stories that are completely invented from my imagination!

Hi Lauren,
So glad you enjoyed the book - thanks for reading!! No plans at this point for a sequel but, between you and me and all of Goodreads, I'd LOVE to revisit Althea and Jay again!! Maybe one day.... meanwhile I've got another book coming out June 2017.
xx Emily

I really loved suspense and mysteries and wanted to write one myself. One night, the central question occurred to me.... what would you do if your 30th birthday was coming up... but that particular birthday had spelled disaster or death for all the women in your family? What would you do? After I had Althea's dilemma, the rest of the story started unfolding. I didn't know what all the answers were, but her tenacity and heart were going to be the keys to unlocking the secrets and saving her own life.

Hi! Thanks for the question! No one book or movie served as inspiration, although I have always been inspired by mystery and suspense novels and movies as well - anything ranging from Nancy Drew when I was a kid to Tana French, Jennifer McMahon, and Gillian Flynn when I got older. I did read Flynn's first book Sharp Objects when it first came out and was instantly a fan of hers. When Gone Girl came out, I was like, "yeah, I TOLD y'all she was great!" Jennifer McMahon's books feel, to me, really similar in tone, etc. to my book. I think she's just a terrific writer as well. And she is not adverse to throwing in a dash of the supernatural, which I love. I'm just starting The Night Sister, which is gratifying creepy....

Being a writer allows you to create worlds and characters and situations and then… BAM… manipulate them in a way that, to be honest, might get you into really big trouble in real life. I love creating a story in my head and then having the privilege of living there for the next year or so. I love creating these people, with very real hopes and dreams and flaws, who desperately want to change their worlds… who are often so much braver than I am in facing their problems. Sometimes, I lie in bed at night and disappear myself into that alternate world. Often, it's a world that's easier to navigate than the real one.

I pretty much wake up in the morning inspired to write. I'd certainly rather do that than clean house, do laundry, pay bills or go grocery shopping, which are my other jobs! But maybe the word "inspired" is a bit misleading. It might be more accurate to say I am always excited to make progress on whatever project I'm working on. I don't know that I'm always inspired. Sometimes, it's just a matter of feeling happy to get a few more pages under my belt.
