Start selecting ideas about things you are interested in. Go for what you like the most and are most familiar with. If you like traveling, baking or whatever, build you novel around that.

The best thing about being a writer is that I can write everywhere. It's very flexible. I can bring my little pink PC with me when I drive my teenagers to Taekwondo and Kickboxing. I sit there for hours waiting for them, with my earplugs in, writing novels.

I have not experienced writer's block yet. Before I start writing, I outline every chapter. I try to follow the outline, but sometimes the characters want to do something else, and that's fine. On days when it's difficult to concentrate, I focus on the outline. The writing may not be great, but I can always go back another day and make it better.
