Who was violently shaking my campervan in the middle of the night in the Australian desert? Still makes me shudder to this day...

I'm currently working my way through Maya Angelou's collection. It's not new, of course. I felt called back to her for some reason. I'm so familiar with her first book, Caged Bird, as I studied it in-depth. Up until now I hadn't paid much attention to her other books, and I feel they deserve a read. She was such a wise woman with so much to share.
I'm also on the lookout for great young adult/new adult book recommendations. This is the genre I write, so if you loved a book, please send its title my way! I've heard a lot of noise about Colleen Hoover's novels, so I'll be giving them a go when I get time. Which one would you recommend?

It's a film, not book, but someone still wrote it, hey?
Pandora. I'm a massive Avatar fan. I once painted myself blue and became Neytiri. I do cos-play.
I'd probably travel to that world, hang out with the forest people, ride a dragon and try to save our environment, that'd be cool. Alternatively, I'd become one of the sea people and have amazing underwater adventures. It all looks pretty idyllic to me (before the humans come and mess it all up, that is).

It was a dark and stormy night when the power cut out. The author had not backed up her novel to the cloud.

I paint, I clean, I travel, I work, I spend time in nature.
It's amazing how many ideas can come to you when you're around a moving body of water - the sea, or a river usually do it for me.
As a travel writer, I like to be on the go, so a good train ride often loosens up the writer's block. I find inspiration in films, TV shows and in the few role-models I hold dear. I re-read my old diaries and travel-journals. I reconnect with friends I've had adventures with. We reminisce with funny stories and silly anecdotes.
Ted Talks can help, as can You Tube, but the quickest way can also be a walk to the shop to get wine!

Getting to create magic, to conjure up whole new worlds. To invent people you would love to meet in real life, who you haven't been able to find yet in reality. You can surround yourself with your dream crowd. I love the freedom of writing, of taking the story anywhere you want to go. That's the beauty of it to me.

Only do it if you truly love it. Not for money nor for fame. The love will keep you going through all the tough stuff, and there is a heck of a lot of tough stuff to get through. Write about something you love, an experience or journey or character you love. That will keep you going to. Also, write about what you know, as the old adage goes. Draw on your own experiences. Then the whole book will sound more authentic. You readers will sense that.

From my hilarious/hideous season working as a summer-camp counsellor in Pennsylvania, USA, many moons ago!

Cleaning the house whilst listening to music, being around water, walking along the beach, travelling, moving my body, dancing and talking with interesting people.

A lighthearted YA diary-style novel about summer-camp, based on my own experiences as a summer-camp counsellor.
