All sorts of things inspire me - anecdotes, people, silly things, random ideas that fly into my head ... it really depends on what I'm writing.
I can't myself 'get inspired' though. I think most writers would share that feeling. Inspiration happens - it isn't something that can be forced.

Great question ... and a tough question. There are so many wonderful couples ... but Jamie and Claire from Outlander ... now they are sizzling!
And I always had a soft spot for Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. They have depth and authenticity.

Hi Audra, I have only just seen this question, and since we've been communicating via my Facebook page, it should be sorted.

Great question, Tanya! I do. Sometimes you go, wow, and other times, it's a slow understanding that there's a story there.
Recently an old eighty-something man came to my work to buy a concert ticket. He shuffled in, his pants high around his waist and hanging off his frail limbs, and told me how much he loved music of all types. Turns out he even had One Direction music (not sure whether that is a good thing). As he talked, the journalist in me took notes, and later, I turned them into the draft of a short story.

I agree, I sit down and have a cuppa with a very fit 80 year old lady each fortnight, and the stories she tells me of the mischief they used to get up
I agree, I sit down and have a cuppa with a very fit 80 year old lady each fortnight, and the stories she tells me of the mischief they used to get up to when she was in her late teens and early twenties living in the South West is so interesting. She goes to rock concerts and footy games, her and her 83 year old partner often find themselves at the races, or driving for 2 hours somewhere for lunch... She is so amazing, walking three times a week, dancing and has sense an incredible sense of humour.

I love seeing older people do this, rather than stay at home and become depressed.

Read as much as you can. Read for enjoyment. Read to see how other writers write. Observe technique.
Establish a routine and write often. Find the way that works for you, whether it's churning out words and fixing later or writing slowly. Write because you can't imagine not writing. But remember to enjoy it.
Learn. Go to workshops or classes if you can. Read books about writing. Find a suitable critique partner who can help you grow. Be humble.

My story, The Point of Love, which is in the Rocky Romance book, was inspired in part by my own work as a journalist and the coastal location that is my home.
My work in progress was inspired in part by newspaper story about ... well, I can't tell you that because it would be a spoiler. Let's just say it was an horrific tragedy.

I'm fascinated by the depth of human emotion so I'm now working on a full-length contemporary novel. The novel (working title The Simple Life) is in its early stages, but will tell the story of a couple who move to a small town in search of a simpler life. Will they find what they’re looking for? I’ll keep you posted.

Walk away and do something else. It could be mundane like hanging the washing or preparing a meal. Or, it could be something else creative, like drawing or photography. I find I'm nourished by taking part in a variety of creative pursuits.
Joni Mitchell describes this as "field rotation". It works for me.
