Kiley Kellermeyer Hm. Well, I have a slight obsession with dragons, so a large part of me would really love to come across a dragon just to see the beautiful colors, the wings, the grand size. However, I imagine once I came across said dragon I would probably regret having made such a poor life choice.
Other than dragons (which, to be honest, I'm more captivated by than scared of) I would be terrified of anything in the arachnid family, or anything that has TOO MANY LEGS. ::flails::
As for my companion, I think a brawny huntsman might be nice to have along. Someone to start fires and help this indoor-girl through the woods. But I wouldn't say no to a talking animal friend, either!
Kiley Kellermeyer I think the single thing that has helped me the most is, of course, reading. That is an overused answer, but it helps you to find words, phrases, and rhythm. It helps you understand what you like and don't like and what works and doesn't work. Apart from that, finding a writer's group and a network of other writers has been invaluable and I cannot recommend such a thing enough.
Kiley Kellermeyer Back in 2008, I was reading a book of translated French fairy tales, as well as another book based on fairy tales, so stories of the sort were spinning through my head. At the same time, the phrase "damsel in distress" kept popping into my mind and I began playing with the spelling, eventually ending up with "Damselle." To me, this sounded like a proper name rather than a general term, and so I began to work out the tale of a girl who might always be in some sort of trouble. Then it seemed natural to me to weave in all the sorts of stories in which damsels usually appear so that my Damselle could prove she was capable of saving herself. And that's what I did.
